Bandish is a fixed, melodic composition in Hindustani vocal or instrumental music. The word is derived from Hindi language which means “binding together”. It is set in a specific raaga with a certain lyrics and emotion in mind. A Bandish can have a words spoken by people in the form of poems, sargams, or taraana bols. Bandishes are performed with tanpura and rhythmic accompaniment such as tabla, pakhawaj, etc. Some of the main accompaniments for Bandish are Harmonium, Sarangi, Violin, etc.
